How to Style a Potli Bag with a Saree, Lehenga or Suit

How to Style a Potli Bag with a Saree, Lehenga or Suit

You have the saree sorted. The blouse is stitched, the jewellery is laid out, the shoes are by the door. And then you pick up your everyday handbag, hold it against the drape, and something goes wrong.

It is a small thing that ruins a big effort. A leather sling against a Benarasi. A structured office tote next to a lehenga. The outfit was right until the bag entered the frame.

This is the problem a potli solves — and it solves it better than a clutch, for reasons most people never think about until they have carried one.

What a potli bag actually holds

Let us start with the question everyone asks and nobody answers properly.

A standard potli — roughly 8 inches across when full — comfortably holds:

  • A phone, including the large ones (a 6.7-inch phone fits with room to spare)
  • Keys
  • One lipstick and a compact
  • Cash and two or three cards
  • A folded handkerchief
  • Safety pins and a spare saree pin

What it will not hold: a water bottle, a full-size wallet, or sunglasses in a hard case. That is not a flaw. A potli is an evening bag and it is meant to carry the essentials, not your whole life.

If you need more room, look for a wider-based potli with a gusset rather than sizing up the height — a tall narrow potli gets awkward to reach into, especially standing in a crowd.

Three rules for matching a potli to your outfit

Match the metal, not the colour. This is the single most useful rule and almost nobody follows it. If your saree has gold zari and you are wearing gold jewellery, pick a potli with gold thread or gold beadwork — the colour of the fabric matters far less. A deep green potli with gold work sits perfectly with a red-and-gold saree. A red potli with silver work does not.

Only one of you should have texture. If your blouse is heavy handwork, keep the potli simpler — a solid silk with a plain drawstring and minimal detail. If the blouse is clean and solid, this is where you let the potli carry the embroidery. Two heavily worked pieces sitting next to each other cancel each other out; neither gets noticed.

Size to the occasion, not the outfit. A small potli at a four-hour wedding reception means you spend the evening asking someone to hold things. A large one at a short puja looks like luggage. Think about how long you will be out and what you will actually need to carry.

Potli, clutch or sling — an honest comparison

Potli Clutch Sling
Hands free Yes — drawstring over the wrist No Yes
Works with a saree Excellent Good Poor — the strap cuts across the drape
Room inside Moderate Low Moderate to high
Easy to open standing up Yes Awkward Yes
Looks right at a puja or wedding Yes Yes Rarely
Best for Weddings, pujas, receptions, long evenings Short formal events, dinners Daytime, travel, shopping

The honest caveat: a potli is the wrong choice for daytime shopping, travel, or any occasion where you are carrying documents or a water bottle. It is a dressed-up bag for a dressed-up evening. Trying to make it an everyday bag is how people end up disappointed with one.

Styling by occasion

As a wedding guest

You will be standing, greeting, eating, and being photographed for hours. The drawstring over your wrist is what makes this bearable — you can hold a plate and shake hands without hunting for somewhere to put your bag down.

Pick something that echoes the metal in your jewellery. If you are wearing a heavy handwork blouse, keep the potli restrained.

Puja and festive days

Pandal hopping is walking, standing, crowds and anjali. You want both hands free at some point in the evening, and you want to know your phone is not going to slide out. A drawstring potli is genuinely more secure in a crowd than an open-top bag.

Choose a fabric you do not mind brushing against a hundred other people — silk over anything with delicate sequin work that can catch.

Reception and evening functions

This is the one occasion where the potli can be the loudest thing you are wearing. Against a simple solid blouse and a plain drape, a densely embroidered potli reads as deliberate rather than decorative.

Everyday ethnic

Kurta, palazzo, a light cotton saree to the office. Here you want the smallest, plainest potli you own — think of it as a pouch with better manners. Solid silk, minimal work, one colour that goes with most of your wardrobe.

Potlis as gifts

Potlis have quietly become one of the most sensible gifts in Indian weddings, for a simple reason: they suit everyone, regardless of size, and they are used rather than stored.

They work particularly well as:

  • Return gifts — memorable, useful, and they photograph beautifully on the gift table
  • Bridesmaid gifts — order in one design across several colours so each person gets something personal
  • Trousseau additions — a set of three in different weights covers the whole wedding season

We take bulk orders on potli bags with custom colour and thread matching. If you are planning a wedding or an event, message us on WhatsApp with your quantity and timeline — the earlier you ask, the more design options we can offer.

Looking after a handwork potli

Store it stuffed with soft tissue so the base keeps its shape, and keep it in a cloth bag rather than plastic — metallic thread tarnishes faster in trapped humidity, which matters in Kolkata.

Never fold a potli flat with the embroidery inside; the thread crushes and does not recover. And keep perfume away from zardosi work — spray first, dress after.

Frequently asked questions

Will a potli bag fit a large phone? Yes. A standard 8-inch potli comfortably holds a 6.7-inch phone along with keys, lipstick and cash.

Can a potli be customised to match my blouse? Yes — we can match thread, colour and work to a blouse we have made for you. Send us the details on WhatsApp.

Do you take bulk orders for wedding return gifts? We do. Message us with your quantity and date and we will share options and pricing.

How do I carry a potli with a saree? Drawstring over the wrist, bag resting just below it. Do not hold it in your palm — that is what makes it look like a pouch rather than a bag.

At Sarla Creations, we celebrate the art of handcrafted fashion. Our potli bags are embroidered by the same karigars who make our blouses, in the same Kolkata studio — which means they can be matched to each other, thread for thread.
