Durga Puja 2026 Blouse Guide: Six Days, Six Looks

by Sarla Creations on Aug 27, 2026
Durga Puja 2026 Blouse Guide: Six Days, Six Looks

Every year it goes the same way. Mahalaya plays on the radio, the pandal frames go up on the para corner, and you tell yourself there is plenty of time. Then it is Panchami evening, you are standing in front of an open almirah with four sarees and not one blouse that fits properly, and the tailor has stopped picking up his phone.

This year, let us do it differently.

Durga Puja 2026 falls on 16–21 October, with Mahalaya on 10 October. That gives you a real window to plan — and this guide is here to help you use it. Six days, six looks, and a stitching timeline that will not leave you panicking on Shashthi morning.

Start now, not in October

Here is the part most people get wrong.

A custom handwork blouse takes about 21 days from the day we take your measurements. That is not us being slow — hand embroidery genuinely takes that long, and then there is cutting, lining, finishing and a fitting round. For a heavy bridal or occasion piece, allow six to eight weeks.

Count backwards from 16 October and you land in the third week of September. Order after that and we cannot promise the blouse will reach you before Panchami.

If you are reading this in September, you are in good shape. If you are reading it in October, skip ahead to the ready-to-wear section — we have you covered there too.

Six days, six looks

Panchami — ease into it

Panchami is the warm-up. The pandal hopping starts in the evening, the crowds are still manageable, and you will be walking more than you expect.

Go light. A solid blouse in a good colour, paired with a cotton or soft silk saree, does more here than heavy work ever will. Choose something breathable with a comfortable armhole — you want to be looking at the idol, not adjusting your sleeve.

Shashthi — the first real look

Bodhon happens today. The Goddess arrives, the dhaak starts, and the photographs begin in earnest.

This is where a handwork blouse earns its place. Fine aari work in a colour that lifts your saree rather than competing with it — think deep green, wine, mustard or a soft gold. Keep the neckline clean if the embroidery is busy. The blouse should look considered, not loud.

Saptami — daytime elegance

Saptami mornings are for anjali, and the light is beautiful for photographs. This is the day to wear something with texture rather than sparkle.

A zardosi work blouse in daylight is a different thing altogether — the metallic thread catches the sun instead of the flash. Pair it with a tussar or a lighter Benarasi and let the blouse do the talking.

Ashtami — the big one

If you buy one new blouse this Puja, buy it for Ashtami.

Ashtami is the day of the anjali, the family photographs, the group pictures at the pandal that will be on everyone's phone for the next year. It is also, traditionally, red.

Every Bengali wardrobe has a red. What we are suggesting is that this year, it is the right red — a proper handwork piece with detailing at the neckline and sleeve, cut to fit you rather than approximately fit you. Red and white is the classic combination for a reason, but a maroon, a rust or a deep rani pink all photograph beautifully.

Ashtami is also when a full sleeve blouse comes into its own. Elbow-length or full, with work running down the arm, gives you a much more finished look in photographs than a short sleeve does.

Navami — dress up properly

Navami evening is the last big night, and the whole city knows it. This is the night for the heaviest thing you own.

If there is a wedding-level piece in your almirah, this is its day. Our wedding blouse collection is built for exactly this kind of evening — dense handwork, structured fit, the sort of blouse that holds its shape from 8 pm to 2 am.

Dashami — white, red, and sentiment

Sindoor khela, boron, the immersion. Dashami has its own uniform, and there is no arguing with it: white saree, red border.

Which means the blouse is doing all the work. A red blouse with fine handwork against a plain white drape is one of the most striking looks of the entire Puja — and it photographs beautifully in the crowd. Keep the fabric something you do not mind getting sindoor on.

What actually makes a good Puja blouse

Fabric before design. October in Kolkata is still humid. Raw silk, cotton silk and blended tissue breathe far better than heavy brocade. A gorgeous blouse you cannot bear to wear past 9 pm is not a gorgeous blouse.

Fit before everything. Gaping armholes, hems that ride up, princess seams that sit in the wrong place — we see all of it, every week, and every bit of it is fixable at the measurement stage. Ready-made sizing is a guess. Custom is not.

Sleeves are where the work should go. In a crowded pandal, most of your saree is not visible. Your sleeves and neckline are. Put the embroidery where people will actually see it.

One neutral in the set. If you are buying several blouses, make one of them a versatile solid. It will save you on the day something does not go with something else.

Two things everyone forgets

The petticoat. You spent twenty thousand on the saree and the drape still is not falling right — the petticoat is almost always why. A well-cut satin petticoat changes how the whole thing sits. It costs a fraction of the saree and makes more visible difference than most people expect.

The bag. A regular handbag against a saree looks like an afterthought, and during Puja you are carrying a phone, keys, lipstick and cash for six days straight. A potli bag with the drawstring over your wrist keeps your hands free for the anjali and the photographs both.

Short on time? Start here

If October has arrived and custom is off the table, you still have two good options.

Our readymade blouses are stitched, quality-checked and ship immediately — pick your size and it is done.

Or start with a blouse piece. Choose the fabric you love now, get it stitched to your measurements, and even if it misses this Puja you have something ready for the wedding season that follows straight after.

Frequently asked questions

When is Durga Puja in 2026? Durga Puja 2026 runs from 16 to 21 October, with Mahalaya on 10 October. Maha Ashtami falls on Monday, 19 October.

How early should I order a custom blouse for Puja? Allow 21 days for a standard handwork blouse and six to eight weeks for heavy bridal or occasion pieces. For 2026, that means placing your order by the third week of September.

Do I need to visit the studio for measurements? No. Send us your measurements on WhatsApp and we will guide you through taking them correctly. Visit if you would like a fitting — walk-ins are welcome.

What colour blouse is best for Ashtami? Red is traditional and photographs beautifully, particularly with a white or cream saree. Maroon, rust and deep rani pink are excellent alternatives if you want something less expected.
